What Breaks Wudu
Once you have made wudu , you remain in a state of purity until something nullifies it (a naqid). When that happens, you must perform wudu again before your next prayer.
The nullifiers (nawaqid)
1. Anything exiting from the two private parts
This is the most common nullifier. It includes:
- Urine
- Stool
- Gas (passing wind)
- Madhi, pre-arousal fluid
- Wadi, thick fluid that sometimes comes after urination
- Mani, semen (this also requires ghusl, not just wudu)
- Any other discharge from the front or back passage
A small amount, a large amount, by accident, intentional, they all break wudu.
2. Loss of consciousness
Anything that removes your awareness:
- Deep sleep, sleep so deep that you wouldn’t notice if something happened around you. A light doze while sitting or standing and still aware of your surroundings does not break wudu.
- Fainting or passing out
- Intoxication (and using intoxicants is forbidden in itself)
- Anesthesia or general unconsciousness from a medical procedure
3. Touching the private part with bare skin, with desire
The stronger position (per Ibn Uthaymeen and others) is that this nullifies wudu only when done with sexual desire; accidental touching, or touching during cleaning, without any arousal does not break wudu.
The traditional view held by many scholars is that any direct skin-to-skin contact with the private part nullifies wudu, regardless of intent.
If you want to be safe, re-perform wudu after any direct contact.
4. Eating camel meat
Specifically, only camel meat, not other meats. The Prophet ﷺ was asked: “Should we make wudu after eating camel meat?” He said: “Yes.” (Sahih Muslim)
This applies even though camel meat is fully halal, eating it is a nullifier of wudu by itself.
5. Apostasy from Islam
If a person leaves Islam, their wudu is invalidated. This is mentioned for completeness, for the average reader it is not relevant.
What does NOT break wudu
These are commonly misunderstood. None of the following nullify wudu:
- Touching a woman / man, even a spouse. The Prophet ﷺ used to kiss his wives before prayer without renewing wudu. The Qur’anic verse “or you have touched women” (aw lamastum an-nisa’) refers to sexual relations, per Ibn Abbas.
- Light sleep, dozing while still aware and sitting or standing
- Bleeding from a cut, nosebleed, etc., the stronger position (per Bin Baz, Ibn Uthaymeen, Albani) is that bleeding does not nullify wudu, based on the Companion who continued praying while bleeding from an arrow wound. The traditional view of many scholars considered significant bleeding a nullifier.
- Vomiting, the stronger position (per Bin Baz, Ibn Uthaymeen, Albani) is that vomiting does not nullify wudu, even in large quantities. The traditional view of many scholars treated significant vomiting as a nullifier, but no clear authentic hadith establishes this as a general rule. If you want to be safe, you may renew your wudu; it isn’t strictly required.
- Laughing in prayer, breaks the salah itself but not the wudu
- Eating other foods, chicken, beef, sweets, etc.
- Pus, sweat, tears, none of these nullify
When in doubt, assume you are still in wudu
If you have made wudu and then doubt whether it has been broken, assume it is still valid. Do not re-make wudu based on doubt alone. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Let him not leave the prayer unless he hears a sound or smells an odor.”
Bukhari, Muslim
In other words: be certain it broke before you re-make wudu.
