How to Find the Qibla

The qibla (القبلة) is the direction of the Ka’bah in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Every Muslim faces it during prayer.

Wherever you are in the world, the qibla is a specific compass bearing from your location. Modern tools make it straightforward to find.

The simplest and most reliable method for most people:

  • Muslim Pro (iOS, Android), qibla compass + prayer times
  • Athan (iOS, Android), popular all-in-one app
  • Find Mecca / Qibla Connect, dedicated qibla compass apps
  • Google Qibla Finder at qiblafinder.withgoogle.com, works in any browser, no install

These use your GPS location plus the phone’s compass to point you directly at the Ka’bah. When prompted, calibrate the compass by rotating the phone in a figure-eight motion for accuracy.

Other methods

Look for a nearby mosque

If you can see a mosque, the qibla wall (the wall the imam faces) points toward the Ka’bah. Stand in front of that wall and you face the qibla.

Use the sun (twice a year)

Twice a year, around May 28 and July 16, the sun passes directly over the Ka’bah at solar noon (Makkah time). At those moments, anywhere in the world where the sun is visible, facing the sun is facing the qibla.

For other days, sun position can give a rough indication, but a phone app is far more precise.

Ask another Muslim

In most cities, asking another Muslim, especially at a mosque, will get you a confident answer.

What to do if you genuinely cannot determine the qibla

If after sincere effort you cannot work out the direction:

  1. Make your best estimate based on whatever information you have
  2. Pray in that direction
  3. Your prayer is valid even if it later turns out the direction was wrong

Allah says:

“Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah.”

Qur’an 2:115

The obligation is sincere effort, not perfection.

Special situations

  • Inside the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, face the Ka’bah directly; it is right there
  • Outside Makkah, face the direction of the Ka’bah (a great-circle bearing from your location)
  • On a vehicle for voluntary prayers, you may face the direction of travel
  • In battle or severe fear, pray as able, in whatever direction circumstances allow
